Youngest Nursing Graduate in Florida State University History Makes Waves
At just 18 years old, Demetria Coley has shattered records and made history as the youngest nursing graduate ever at Florida State University's College of Nursing. With a remarkable academic journey that began with homeschooling by her father, a science teacher, Coley's determination and passion for helping others have led her to this incredible milestone.A Trailblazing Academic Path
Coley's educational journey was marked by an accelerated path that began with homeschooling. By age 15, she had already earned an associate degree from Tallahassee Community College (now known as Tallahassee State College), becoming the youngest graduate in that institution's history. This early structure allowed her to move quickly through her education and eventually enroll at Florida State University.
Clinical Training and a Passion for Neonatal Care
During her time at Florida State University, Coley completed clinical training at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare and later undertook a preceptorship at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. Her focus on neonatal care was inspired by her late mother, Elicia Coley, who worked as a nurse before passing away in 2020 due to ovarian cancer.
A Career in the NICU: Following in Her Mother's Footsteps
Coley now plans to begin her career in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), following in the footsteps of her mother. She expressed pride in being able to continue making history and make her mom proud, stating, 'I'm proud of the fact that I'm able to continue to make history and be able to make my mom proud.'
A Growing Trend: Younger Entrants into Nursing
Coley's story reflects a small but growing group of younger entrants into the nursing profession through accelerated paths. While still uncommon, such cases highlight how education models are evolving to accommodate students with diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
Demetria Coley's remarkable achievement serves as an inspiration to aspiring nurses and a testament to the power of determination and hard work. As she begins her career in the NICU, Coley will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of countless patients and families, continuing her mother's legacy in the nursing profession.
