Critical Considerations for Crisis & Safety
CRISIS PROTOCOL (NON-NEGOTIABLE): Every moderator and member must know this. If a member expresses a clear intent to self-harm in real-time (in text or on video):
Engage: Keep them talking. Do not leave them alone. "I'm here with you. Thank you for telling us. We want to help."
Alert: One moderator engages the user directly while another moderator privately contacts you or a lead admin.
Resource: Strongly and repeatedly encourage them to call or text 988. "Brother, can you do me a favor and call 988 right now? They are trained to help in exactly this situation. We can even stay with you while you call."
Emergency Services: If the threat is immediate and you have knowledge of their location, calling 911 is the last resort but a necessary one. This must be handled with extreme care due to the risks of police intervention in Black communities.
