Push Me to the World, But Don’t Leave Me Behind
Amara stood at the edge of the dusty road, her small suitcase by her feet and her dreams somewhere far beyond the horizon. The early morning sun stretched across the sky, soft and golden, like a promise waiting to be fulfilled.
Behind her stood her father.
He wasn’t a man of many words, but his silence always carried weight. Today, it felt heavier than ever.
“You should go,” he finally said, his voice low but steady. “The world is bigger than this place.”
Amara smiled faintly. She had heard those words before countless times. Ever since she got the scholarship letter, everyone had been saying the same thing: Go. Fly. Become something.
But no one ever talked about what it meant to leave.
“I will go,” she said softly. “But… will you be okay without me?”
Her father looked away, pretending to adjust the strap of her bag. “I’ve always been okay.”
That wasn’t true. She knew it. Ever since her mother passed, it had just been the two of them—sharing quiet dinners, laughter over burnt food, and long evenings filled with stories of what life could be.
“I don’t want to lose this,” Amara whispered.
Her father turned back to her, his eyes softer now. “You won’t.”
“But what if I change?” she asked. “What if the world pulls me so far away that I forget where I came from?”
He stepped closer and placed a gentle hand on her shoulder.
“Then I’ll remind you,” he said. “Not by holding you back… but by standing right here, where you can always find your way home.”
Tears filled her eyes, but she smiled through them.
“I need you to push me,” she said. “Push me to the world… to everything I can become.”
Her voice trembled slightly.
